Des aventures avec le francais

After [info]twistedchick's excellent reminder, I've joined LiveMocha under a very predictable user name and, so far, am pleased with the ability to learn at one's own pace as well as the audio support; the voices are strong and clear, and there are dialogue trainers: Especially for someone who wishes to be able to not just write but talk, that's gold.

Less positive elements about LiveMocha )

And oh, via [info]busaikko, have a fun John Sheppard/Joe Flanigan Fanvid in French!

ETA: Heu, nous pouvons créer un jeu interactive, n'est-ce pas? Si tu veux entendre un petit texte que j'ai récité et enrégistré avec mon microfone -- m'envoye ce texte! & ;-)

the secrets of the night

Before my late-night rendez-vous with [info]auburnnothenna, the friend I mentioned did pay me a visit. No movie-going, though; we stayed in my apartment and chatted and drank our body weight in tea. I know, I know, not even alcohol -- I was sick(ish), she was by car, and both of us are clearly getting old.

*dropping the n-th wet teabag into the bin*
Mona: *ponder* Hey, all in one go: When I'll bring you to the door, I'll take out the trash, too.
Ani: ?!

Come to think of it, "taking out the trash" will never sound the same to me after watching a season of Dexter.

Listening to this otherwise rather fabulous song, something that has been bothering me for ages now: The French word "femme" is not pronounced [fem]. It's pronounced [fam] with a short "ah.". (Usage of the term "femmeslash" as if it were the same as "femslash" makes me cranky for the same reason.)

Combien Tu M'aimes? & more

There's a documentary about Mounties on tv. Aw, N24, you shouldn't have.

As for real life -- it's picking up speed again, thank God. [info]grundbuch and I first made curry details for the food fen among you ), then hit the movies (see below) before driving by his parents' place for a It's Not Flooded, Right? check-up and returning to my apartment make dessert and have a drink yet more yumminess ).

As for the whole film experience -- first and foremost, I was thrilled to return to the world of movie theatres. Don't think the rest of the audience even noticed me fidgeting and shifting my seating position every ten seconds, considering the steady streams of whistles and catcalls and the running commentary from the tracksuit gang sitting behind us (a classy cinema this was not). And if you think Mona reviews farcical French movies; how did that happen?, I have two words for you: Sneak Preview )

I love the French class I'm attending, but it inescapably makes me feel very, very stupid; I'm so used to being fluent in another language, ever-ready to dazzle my poor countrymen and even a few native speakers with what passes for wit that these first hours felt a lot like stumbling through a maze -- gagged and with a blindfold *plus* earplugs. Read more... )

Hmm, if I created a French filter, who'd want to be on it?
