Rock on, Star Trek fandom: already found the first genderswitch story.

Me'n Trek Ships. Not, I hasten to say, the Space ones. )

Falling is like this. Kirk/girl!McCoy. \o/ Rated R for language.
There’s a pretty much universal consensus that James T. Kirk won’t die of old age. He might die of some sort of disease, but chances are it’s going to be venereal and possibly something that humans weren’t supposed to contract. Jim Kirk is special that way.

ETA I: Now with 2nd recommendation in the comments.

ETA II: 3rd Trek Genderswitch Rec now found beneath!

Oh. Oh.

I loved this:
John, though - John is a mystery. John is insular in a way rarely encountered outside of monasteries. Rodney may not be able to tell the difference between what he wants and what he needs, but John is a study in denial - the excess of little things when forbidden big ones. He will play motor-cars and slouch at attention, but will not fuck without the door double, triple locked. He refuses morphine, and rebels against excess emotion. He has not trained himself to not want; he has trained himself to not even think of wanting, to have it pass his mind. He is entitled to nothing, and so is given everything.

For John, Rodney thinks, the world must be very beautiful, and very lonely.
A few more quotations? Cut to spare the ones not caring for SGA stories of the John/Rodney variant. )

There's something almost nostalgic about this story, so resonant and haunting - to me, it echoes a time when fandom was younger. And yet, this is about who these characters are, not what they were: everything we've seen about John, about Rodney informs this story, and as a result, it rings true and clear and utterly gorgeous.

Oy, [info]rheanna27 didn't just write a great extended Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles drabble (up to 2x16) - she also wrote the femslash pairing du jour, incidentally the one that I talked about in my TSCC review.

Also, I'm very tzzzzzzzzzzz....

Not a fake-pology but a real one from John Scalzi? I'm impressed...if not as impressed as I am with the guest blogger he invited to speak:

Mary-Ann Mohanraj Gets You Up to Speed (Part I).
Part I: For Everyone
1. We’re all racist.
2. If you’re white, you have white privilege.
3. Your other oppressions don’t erase your white privilege.
4. Racism does damage to the genre.

Part II: For Writers
1. You get to write whatever you want, including CoC (characters of color).
2. If published, you may then be criticized for your handling of race.
3. PoC don’t have an obligation to teach you how to write CoC well and avoid criticism.
4. Nonetheless, here are some suggestions on how to write CoC well.
5. You will get it wrong. This is what you should do.
And here's the link to Part II.

In fannish news, [info]st_salieri on her BtVS Re-watch Mission continues to cheer me up tremendously, this time around with The Diary of Angelus The Great.

::

SGA-wise, I was blown away by [info]isagel's post-Vegas story, gritty and layered and going beyond what we've seen, straight to the heart of these characters:

Until Love Can Find Me. John/Rodney. NC-17. 10k words. Spoilers for 5x19.
Spoiler quotation )

Oh, and, incidentally, John is kind of a hero.

He nearly tears his stitches laughing.

While we're at it, it being this inspiring episode?

In fannish news, I spent the time before [info]hermine arrived not just baking and cleaning but also faffing around on the internets. Of course I did.

Reading Comprehension & Race )

While I'm at it, have I already recommended [info]busaikko's War Stories universe, with the latest story already linked above? Well, I do now. Yes, she is the author who gives Sheppard AIDS, a penis where it doesn't belong, and, in this 'verse, a disability, but trust me, it always Makes Sense, is always worth the read. ♥

Same old, same old: During the day, I come up with a dozen posts...but when I get home? Gone like a tub of Häagen Dazs Dulce de Leche in my freezer.

Instead, a few SGA links for your pleasure:

1. [info]face_of_joe continues to make every day 23.3% better. ♥

2. Stumbled across a constructed reality/SGA AU vid. Rather...intriguing, the middle part meta more than anything, and some bits oddly disturbing. Here's my question to you: Are there other SGA vids of this genre, using footage from other parts of Joe's and David's, err, oeuvre? I seem to recall something...

3. 3 McShep Recommendations, random as ever, adult as so often. )

People, people, [info]velocitygrass has written an utterly heart-warming piece of fanfiction for me:
Amelia and Anne. G. Amelia Banks/Anne Teldy (duh). Spoilers for Whispers.
This is femslash, yes - but mostly, it's a story about Atlantis and the people living on it. And I love both elements equally. Greetings to Joe Mallozzi, by the way: We can take it from here; boy, can we ever: We'll just keep making our own fun lesbians.

(Would anyone care for more Amelia icons? I have had trouble locating hi-res shots of her or Major Teldy's team, alas, or Whispers would have inspired an icon post.)

I came home to find this in my lj:

He's hanging up his uniform shirts when he spots it in the closet.

The title gave it away, but the line above? I would have known what it meant immediately. Ard readers, girls and boys and all other friends, [info]auburnnothenna gave me the Future Snippet we had been talking about since oh, God, 2006?

The red dress from Hermea, a material reminder of the six months he spent as a woman. He never wore it anywhere but when he tried it on to shut the saleswoman up.

Auburn still writes like a dream. A wet one. Share it? (Usual warnings apply: This is so, so not safe for work.)

The Red Dress

[Please don't link to this yet; I'll beta, and Auburn will put up the proper version in her lj, for communities, and the newsletter later, I'm sure. Just - I CAN'T HOLD IN THE JOY, OKAY?]

While I've caught my parents' flu-ish bug, my dear Busaikko has written a most curative story for me.

Frequently Wrong but Never in Doubt by [info]busaikko
Sheppard went, sat, and looked politely away as Rodney pulled on his discarded boxers. "I talked to Jeannie. My plane was delayed; she said to just come here." Sheppard made another awkward noise. "She said you said we could share the room, and. Um."
It's just what I was currently looking for in a story or a good cup of tea: hot and sweet, with that little extra dash of milkje ne sais quoi. Visits to Earth are a favourite of mine, and it's no secret that busaikko's writing gets me where I live, evocative and visceral, with a John that makes my heart ache so pleasantly and a Rodney who's true to the show yet makes me smile a lot more often.

Also sharing 6 SGA icons made over time. That's something I have now, eh? & :-/

Did my taxes yesterday, or rather, collected, ordered, and prepared, which was a task in and by itself, and then turned the whole thing over to my parents' friend who does theirs. One worry off my chest, at least: baby steps! With crutches.

Icons

Icons spoilery for 5x01 Search & Rescue right here! )

Twelve Stargate Atlantis Icons of John, Sam, Ronon, Teyla, Jeannie, and Rodney )

Four Joe Flanigan icons including three from the very recent Chelsea Lately show )

As always, please rock'n roll. I mean, comment'n credit.

In BtVS news, [info]nwhepcat has written an all-too-apt Welcome to the Hellmouth drabble; check out the second one here.

As for Stargate Atlantis, [info]thingswithwings has written a Meredith/Teyla story both ingenious and lovely; check it out!

Food, recs, and a link. [info]lierdumoa, your indulgence has nothing on MY indulgence.
Since it's TTOTM, I'm having this for dinner (and a salad afterwards, for some freshness & vitamins):

Lotus Seed and Tapioca Pearl in Coconut Milk )

I blame [info]machinistm who kept lauding her green-tea-filled-with-chocolate daifuku. mach, I got the traditional ones filled with red bean paste because that--plus peanut and sesame, not favourites of mine--was the only option.

When I compiled my quality, not quantity! list of fanfic written in 2007, I forgot the first story written that year, and one of my two femslash offerings, at that: Twenty-One, Alias, rated R.

Note to self & others: Tag your fic properly the moment you post it.

And while I'm at it, two insta-recs of the the SGA kind. )

Also, the ones who are interested already know, and the rest couldn't possibly care less, but it's Joe Flanigan's birthday. Have 3 icons! )

(I'm recommending an SGA story, but really, this is more like a review. You may want to read the fic first and then come back. Suit yourself.)

Maybe this is a case of Be Careful What You Wish for, but since it tends to be rare, I greatly enjoy fanfiction that doesn't just touch upon my story preferences but actual hobbies of mine. Photography is right there in the summary, so how I missed this story the first time around I have...an idea, actually: I don't usually pursue fic featuring Lorne for reasons both within and outside canon. He may be snarky, but he's also your model boy soldier, your perfect 2IC, your so-sympathetic painter with a sensitive soul underneath the uniform. Then, there's the fact of my general affinity to protagonists, as I told [info]rez_lo very recently; minor characters generally don't do it for me unless they ping my very own radar. This story, though? Transcends that Lorne!fic category in my mind in several ways.

More about the story I'm talking about, or perhaps more about me & my reading of the story in question )

Here you go, hopefully literally:

Tanlines & Dogtags by [info]icarusancalion. Lorne and Sheppard, mild exhibitionism, NC-17.

***

While we're at it, may I add a pair of exceedingly well-written Sheppard/McKay smut that left me quite breathless? Pi and Aesc have never disappointed me with their longer, plottier, often humorous and/or lyrical stories, and I'm always looking forward for more from either-both of them.

PWP warning. (Hah, warning. "Incentive," to many.)

SGA, John/Rodney, no spoilers. NC-17. By [info]apple_pi.

And its companion piece from Rodney's POV:

.pornlet. (John/Rodney) NC17. By [info]aesc.

***

There was more. I know there was more. I should really make a habit of putting favourites of mine in the Memories.
